Because “thriving” shouldn’t end when the school begins.
Late summer hits different when you're a mom.
There’s this weird intersection of grief and glee: you’re thrilled for the back to school routine but also slightly haunted by lunchboxes, immune system roulette, and the fact that no one ever packed you a bento box with flower-shaped cucumbers...
If you're anything like me, you don’t want to slap a Disney character on a toxic plastic water bottle and call it a day. You want your kiddo to feel rooted and resilient, but also physically and emotionally cared for.. You want slow mornings, strong immunity, and a home that feels like a soft landing after a hard day of being brave in the world.
This isn’t a checklist. It’s a spellbook for back-to-school season.
Let’s Start with a Story (Because That’s How Healing Begins)
I was a kindergarten dropout.
No seriously, I made it three days before my nervous system threw the emergency brake.
Back-to-school season wasn’t exciting for me. It was a full-body shutdown.
And my mom — bless her for putting up with me.
She bought a book called The Kissing Hand, and the night before my second attempt at school, she read it to me. Then she kissed the center of my palm and told me,
“If you get scared, just press your hand to your cheek. I’ll be there.”
I carried that kiss with me for years.
And now, even though I’m not a parent yet, I know what I hope for the kids in my life, and what I wish more families had: a rhythm that nurtures nervous systems, not just report cards.
1. Slow Mornings Are a Sacred Act of Rebellion
We live in a culture that thinks running late and inhaling sugary cereal counts as a “normal” start to the day.
Yeah, let’s not...
What if mornings looked like:
-
Gentle wake-ups without alarms that sound like war sirens
-
A warm herbal tea or nourishing smoothie instead of neon-colored "juice"
-
Packing lunches together the night before, so you’re not cursing at tupperware at 7:12am
-
Five quiet minutes just being — stretching, breathing, hugging, not rushing
We’re not just “getting ready” we’re attuning to the day ahead. A calm start sets the tone for how your child (and you) feel in their skin all day.
2. What Goes In Their Body Matters More Than What Goes in Their Backpack
The back-to-school season is basically an immune system hazing ritual. Snot, stress, cafeteria pizza… yeah maybe I have a mental block on the cafeteria pizza. Was it even actually pizza...?
Holistic food support doesn’t have to be a massive overhaul. Just small, intentional shifts:
-
Swap out the sugar-loaded yogurts for full-fat, no-sugar Greek with honey and berries
-
Add elderberry syrup or echinacea tinctures to their morning routine (talk to your herbalist, of course)
-
Focus on protein-rich snacks and mineral-rich broths to keep them grounded and strong
And please, for the love of the mitochondria, hydrate them. With actual water.
3. Immune Support Starts at Bedtime
Nighttime is where magic happens. Melatonin resets, bodies repair, and connection deepens.
If you’re not already romanticizing bedtime, here’s your cue. A few ideas:
-
Herbal foot soaks or a warm magnesium bath before bed
-
A ritual oil rubdown with lavender or chamomile-infused oils (kids LOVE this)
-
Reading together with intention — storybooks that soothe, not overstimulate
This is where my children’s books come in.
Mother Goose’s Family Farm + Herbal Tales aren’t just stories, they’re grounding, herbal-hearted rituals disguised as bedtime magic.
They're how you pass down care, the way my mom did with The Kissing Hand.
4. Your Home Might Be Messing With Their Hormones
No one talks about this enough.
If your child is suddenly more emotional, more reactive, not sleeping well — sure, some of that is just life... but some of it might be the products you're using.
So many everyday household items are loaded with endocrine disruptors. These can throw off not just your child’s body but the entire emotional dynamic of your home.
That’s why I created the 40+ Healthy Home Swaps Checklist — it’s a free guide to detox your home, starting with the stuff that’s quietly wreaking havoc.
It’s more than a cleaning swap list, it’s a blueprint for a calmer, more regulated family.
Back-to-School, But Make It Soulful
You don’t have to do this season like everyone else. You’re allowed to opt out of chaos culture and anchor into something slower, wiser, and rooted.
Here’s your reminder that intentional living doesn’t have to be perfect. It just has to be present.
So breathe.
Put the elderberry syrup on the counter, so you don't forget.
Read the book.
Make the morning tea.
And pack the lunch like it’s an act of love — because it is.

Back-to-school doesn’t have to feel like a battlefield. With care, it can feel like a homecoming.
You’ve got this, mama. And if no one else said it today — I’m proud of you.
With love and hugs,
Bailey
